In addition to the Dragonflight announcement this morning, Blizzard also announced that World of Warcraft Classic will be bringing the Wrath of the Lich King expansion into the fold later in 2022.
It was hardly unexpected since Wrath of the Lich King is considered by many to be the best World of Warcraft expansion ever produced. So for it to be included in World of Warcraft Classic is almost a foregone conclusion, especially after the release of Burning Crusade Classic.
Key Differences
That being said, there are a couple of very key differences coming to Wrath of the Lich King in Classic. The biggest change is the removal of Dungeon Finder. It was a good concept on paper, but proved to be very divisive among fans, since some felt that a group of three or four friends could have one random person join, then promptly steal all the good loot they were looking for, and immediately drop from the group, never to be heard from again. While this was largely addressed in subsequent updates and patches, and has now become a rather integral part of World of Warcraft, at the time of its introduction in Lich King, Dungeon Finder proved to be somewhat controversial.
Another big change to this expansion is that you will be able to immediately start a Death Knight, regardless of the level of your other characters. Previously, when Lich King was originally reduced, a requirement for the Death Knight hero class was to have at least one level 70 character. This is no longer the case in Classic, especially since you will be able to boost a character up to level 70 immediately anyway. I already know which character I’ll use it on, since I’ve been struggling with levelling that poor character, and I could really use them to craft high-capacity bags.
Final Thoughts
This one was a long time coming, and a great deal of nostalgia for me, since I had an amazing time playing Lich King with friends all those years ago, even if it was on a PVP server. As I mentioned, it was hardly unexpected, since Lich King was such a vaunted expansion by fans and critics over the last 15 years, adding it to World of Warcraft Classic seemed almost a foregone conclusion. I, for one, cannot wait to start a new Death Knight fresh, and level them, kick ass, and revisit old haunts, no pun intended.
